Zakat is the Third Pillar of Islam — a mandatory annual contribution that purifies wealth and redistributes it to those in need. At Compassion Fund, it is the foundation of our work.
What Is Zakat?
The word Zakat derives from the Arabic root meaning purification and growth. It refers to the mandatory 2.5% annual contribution on eligible wealth held for one full lunar year (Hawl) above the Nisab threshold. Allah commands in the Quran: “Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase.” (Quran 9:103). Zakat is not a tax — it is an act of worship that acknowledges all bounty belongs to Allah.
Who Must Pay Zakat?
Zakat is obligatory for every adult Muslim of sound mind who owns wealth above the Nisab (87.5g gold or 612g silver) for a complete lunar year. Given current market values, most Muslims with modest savings meet this threshold.
The Eight Recipients
Allah specified in Quran 9:60 who may receive Zakat. The eight categories — the Masarif al-Zakat — include the poor, the needy, those in debt, and the stranded traveller. Compassion Fund distributes Zakat exclusively within these categories, verified by our Shariah compliance officer before every disbursement cycle.
How We Distribute Your Zakat
Every Zakat fund is held in a dedicated ring-fenced account, never mixed with Sadaqah or Waqf. Field teams verify eligibility before each campaign. Donors receive a full impact report after disbursement. Your Zakat is not a formality — it is a lifeline.
