Ramadan is the most generous month of the Islamic calendar. The rewards for charity are multiplied, the spirit of giving is heightened, and the need among our communities does not pause. This guide covers the three forms of Ramadan giving so you can give with knowledge and confidence.
Zakat Al-Fitr: Obligatory Before Eid Prayer
Zakat Al-Fitr (Fitrana) is mandatory for every Muslim — man, woman, child, and infant — before the Eid Al-Fitr prayer. The Prophet said it is obligatory as “a purification of the fasting person from idle talk and obscenity, and to provide food for the poor.” (Abu Dawud 1609). It must be paid before the Eid prayer — paying after renders it ordinary Sadaqah. The amount equals approximately 2.5 kg of staple food (or its cash equivalent) per household member — roughly USD 10 to USD 15 per person. Compassion Fund ensures all Fitrana reaches beneficiaries before Eid morning.
Zakat Al-Mal: Your Annual Wealth Purification
Many Muslims pay their annual Zakat Al-Mal in Ramadan for the added reward, though it is due based on your personal Hawl (lunar year cycle). Calculate 2.5 percent of your total Zakatable assets — savings, gold, silver, and trade goods — above the Nisab threshold.
Voluntary Sadaqah: Give Beyond the Obligation
The Prophet was described as more generous in Ramadan than the fresh wind. Even a date, a glass of water, or a kind word counts as charity. For those able to give more, Ramadan is the ideal time for Sadaqah Jariyah — water wells, Quran education, or Waqf endowments whose rewards continue flowing long after the month ends.
