Your Complete Ramadan Giving Guide: Zakat, Sadaqah, and Zakat Al-Fitr

Ramadan is the most generous month of the Islamic calendar. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was described as being “more generous in Ramadan than the blowing wind.” The rewards for good deeds are multiplied, and the hearts of believers turn naturally toward giving. But with so many types of charity available, donors often feel uncertain about where to start, what obligations they have, and how to maximise their impact.

This guide clarifies everything you need to know about giving in Ramadan.

1. Zakat Al-Fitr — Obligatory Before Eid

Zakat Al-Fitr (also called Fitrana) is a mandatory charity due from every Muslim before the Eid Al-Fitr prayer. It purifies the fast, atones for any deficiencies in Ramadan, and ensures that the poor can celebrate Eid with dignity. The amount is approximately the equivalent of one full meal for one person — traditionally calculated as about 2.5 kg of staple food (or its cash equivalent, typically $10–15 per person).

It must be paid before the Eid prayer. Compassion Fund ensures all Zakat Al-Fitr donations received before the 27th night of Ramadan are distributed to eligible recipients before Eid morning.

2. Zakat Al-Mal — Your Annual Obligation

Many Muslims choose Ramadan to pay their annual Zakat Al-Mal, even if their Hawl (lunar year) falls at a different time. The increased spiritual focus and the promise of multiplied rewards make it the most popular time for Zakat payment. Calculate 2.5% of all zakatable assets held above the Nisab for one year and give it through a verified, Shariah-compliant organisation.

3. Voluntary Sadaqah — Give What You Can

Beyond obligations, Ramadan is the time to give generously through voluntary Sadaqah. Every date shared, every iftar hosted, every contribution to a food programme is rewarded abundantly. Consider setting a daily giving target — even $1 per day across 30 days adds up to $30 that feeds a family for a month through our Food4All programme.

4. Sadaqah Jariyah — Leave a Legacy

Ramadan is the perfect time to establish a lasting legacy. A Sadaqah Jariyah contribution — funding a water well, sponsoring a student, or contributing to a Waqf endowment — will generate reward long after the blessed month has passed.
