What Is Zakat?

Zakat is an obligatory annual payment made by eligible Muslims — 2.5% of accumulated wealth that has been held for one full lunar year and exceeds the Nisab threshold. It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and a fundamental act of worship.

Unlike Sadaqah (voluntary charity), Zakat is a right of the poor upon the wealthy. Paying it is not generosity — it is an obligation. Withholding it without valid excuse is a grave sin in Islam.

Understanding the Nisab Threshold

You are obligated to pay Zakat if you have held wealth equivalent to 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver for one complete lunar year. In practical terms, if your savings, investments, and business goods exceed this threshold after deducting your immediate liabilities, Zakat becomes due.
